Croatian and Spanish Wine
imported by American Northwest

Join us this coming Saturday and try a curious selection of wines from Croatia & Spain. We aren’t sure exactly what these wines have in common, except that they are all uncommon distinct, unique and unusual. So take a step out of the ordinary and come give them a try. Anton Fedechkin of local importer American Northwest Distributors will be on hand to talk about the wine.

2005 Pionero Maccerato Albarino, Rias Baixas $15
This Albarino from northwest Spain spends two weeks in temperature controlled tanks fermenting on the skins. This gives the wine its name, as well as adds a mind-boggling depth and length to the body. The Maccerato has a variety of tropical fruit aromas complimented by light citrus and melon notes with pleasant weight, a good balance of fruit, and minerals that finish off clean and fresh.

2005 Kozlovic Malvasia, Istra $22
Malvasia is an ancient grape that originated in Greece, but spread long ago to most of the Mediterranean. The Kozlovic from the picturesque hills of northern Iztria is a dry straw yellow colored wine of excellent structure with a pronounced scent of apple and almonds. This Croatian example shows how well Malvasia can be made

2005 Cucos de la Arbequilla Cabernet Sauvignon, Jumilla $ 11
Arguably the strangest Cabernet out there, the Cucos goes through Carbonic fermentation, fermenting inside the berries in whole clusters before being pressed. It then spends two weeks macerating in clay amphorae buried underground which takes away some of the Cabernet edge and adds pleasant softness and roundness. Finally, two weeks of French oak barrels and you have a truly explosive fruit forward wine with tannins that will stand up to a thick barbecued rare steak.

2004 Dingac Plavac Mali, Pelješac $34
From the area of Dingac on Croatia's Pelješac peninsula comes this tasty red wine made from the Plavac Mali grape. Distinctly Croatian, the wine is rich, full of violet and blackberry fruit with a touch of musk on the finish. It makes a perfect match for grilled meats.

2005 Las Renas Dulce Monastrell, Bullas $17
This late harvest Monastrell is made from 40-50 year old vines from southeastern Spain. The Dulce is picked two weeks past maturity and undergoes a long maceration of 3 weeks at 5-7 degrees celsius and what you get is an elegant, refined red dessert wine with beautiful floral, pastry notes, bright fruit and soft barely noticeable tannins that make it perfect for any cheesy (literally) dessert.
