Bourgeois Family Selections

Join us this coming Saturday when we'll be pouring wines from French importer Jean-Philippe Bourgeois of Bourgeois Family Selections. The wines are all from small estates that practice sustainable farming with some being certified organic or biodynamic. They are hand picked and hand crafted and better yet are quite fun to drink. John Beuscher will be on hand to pour and tell you more.

2006 Domaine de Caravinserail, in fine blanc, Cotes du Ventoux  $12
The in fine is a blend of Clairette, Ugni Blanc, Grenache Blanc and Bourboulenc.  The wine is un-oaked letting the fruit and terroir show through.  It is bright and fresh, with peach and floral notes followed by a lively finish.  It's a refreshing summer white.

2006 Domaine des Gerbeaux, Macon Villages,  $17
A Maconnais Chardonnay from a biodynamic producer, the Gerbeaux is a viscous, smooth, mineral packed wine with full fruit and is refreshing, and elegant. The wine goes great with appetizers, salads, and light meals, or is just fun to drink by itself.

2006 Domaine des Gerbeaux, Pouilly-Vinzelles  $25
Made from Chardonnay vines from a higher elevation on hillside vineyards with a southern exposure, Gerbeuax's Pouilly-Vinzelles is a very elegant wine, rich, with mineral, citrus and white flower aromas. The wine is aged for 6 to 8 months in old French oak barrels adding body but not oak flavor to the wine.  More Chardonnay should taste this good.

2005 Domaine de la Berthete, Sensation, Cotes du Rhone, $14
Grenache 50%, Syrah 25%, Carignan 20%, and Cinsault 5%The domain mostly contains older vines growing on a calcareous clay soil that yields wines that, although highly fruity and aromatic, have a strong and tannic backbone.  The Sensation comes off smooth and well structured making it a great food wine.

2006 Clos Cristal, Samur-Champigny  $23
Clos Cristal is historically symbolic for Saumur wine growers, not only because its creator was the first to develop red wines in Saumur, but also because in about 1900, he conceived of an ingenious project. He built 2 miles of walls along which, and through which, the vines grow. Close to the walls, the vine takes advantage of the heat accumulated by the stone, which enables a greater level of ripeness in the fruit.  This Samur-Champignay is from 40 year old Cabernet Franc.   The vineyards are certified organic.   The wine has silky smooth tannins, lots of dark fruit and a note of leather.
