Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir |
Join us this Saturday to sample a selection of different Pinots. We’ll start with a couple of Gris, Oregon’s second most popular Pinot. Then we’ll follow with a couple of Willamette Valley Pinot Noirs that show great Northwest character. For comparison we’ll finish with a Pinot Noir from New Zealand showing how distinct Pinto Noirs character can be when it is grown in a different region. Still the essential Pinot- ness shows through. Brian Huse will be on hand to talk about the wines and their makers. Come check it out
2006 Big Fire Pinot Gris, R. Stuart & Co Oregon $13
From an old granary in downtown McMinnville, R. Stuart & Co makes Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir and sparkling wines from Temperance Hill, Melrose, Daffodil Hill and Weber vineyards. Their Big Fire Pinot Gris is crisp and delicious with flavors of pears, apples and delicate blossoms. The balance of vibrant fruit and luscious body make it a versatile food wine, matching Thai food, salads, and grilled chipotle lime shrimp.
2006 Shadow Mountain Pinot Gris, Willamette Valley $14
Shadow Mountain Vineyards is a family owned wine company that produces small quantities of hand crafted Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris from their 24 acre estate vineyard located 15 miles northwest of Eugene. Shadow Mountain uses all sustainable viticulture practices. The Pinot Gris is bright and fresh with aromas of pears, green apples, and citrus fruits. The wine has a good fruit to acid balance and a long spicy finish.
2006 Shadow Mountain Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley $19
Shadow Mountain’s seven acres of Pinot Noir is cropped at just over 2 tons acre. That means that they produce only 500 cases of Pinot a year. (Still they keep the price under $20 a bottle. Haven’t they heard Pinot Noir is suppose to be expensive?) The Shadow Mountain is full bodied Pinot Noir with aromas of black cherries and plums mixed with spices and toasty oak. Soft tannins complement the long finish.
2006 Anne Amie, Pinot Noir, Cuvée A, Willamette Valley $25
In the small winery packed town of Carlton Oregon, Anne Amie produces an array of Pinot noirs as well as a few whites. Their Cuvée A is dark garnet with a clean bouquet filled with aromas of spice, fresh blackberries, plums, and hints of forest floor. On the palate there are notes of crème brulée, sassafras, black cherries, and well integrated oak. The smooth, long finish is lively and accentuated by firm tannins.
2002 Akarua Pinot Noir, The Gullies, Central Otago, New Zealand $30
New Zealand Pinots have a unique taste quite distinct from Burgundy, Oregon, and certainly from California. It would be great to have a tasting just of New Zealand Pinots but today we just have one. The Gullies Pinot Noir flirts a vibrant bouquet of wild strawberries and raspberries, with lower tone notes of dried mushrooms, earthiness and hints of smoky herbs. The wine is well balanced with good acidity and supple tannins.
