Chateau St. Martin
Right Bank Bordeaux

Come join us this Saturday to try a great line up of wines from the right side of the Bordeaux Valley where Merlot is king. But this isn’t the kind of Merlot that was disparaged in the movie Sideways. Merlot from Bordeaux is complex with a definite unique terrior, and blending it is a combination of art and tradition. While some Bordeaux takes more time to mature, we’ve assembled a line up of them that are drinking wonderfully now. These wines are directly imported into Seattle by Chateau St. Martin which allows them to offer good wine at good prices. Come check them out. Jeremy Minor will be on hand to tell you more.

2005 Bel Air Perponcher Reserve Rouge $17
  Bordeaux AOC

80% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc
The new release from the much-touted 2005 vintage, the Perponcher has generous and ample structure. The palate gives full fruit flavors and supple mouth feel. The Reserve Rouge is a harmonious and charming wine.

2003 Le Chene du Puynard $16.50
  Cotes de Blaye

70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon
Le Chene de Puynard has a very expressive bouquet of ripe fruit with spicy vanilla overtones. The 2003 is full-bodied, smooth and well balanced on the palate. An elegant hint of oak underlines the powerful, velvety tannin.

2001 Chateau Tour Saint-Andre $20
  Lalande de Pomerol

55%Cabernet Franc, 35% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon
The second wine of Chateau Haut Chaigneau, the Tour Saint-Andre is unabashedly geared towards easy, pleasant drinking. Thanks to its fresh fruitiness, it is delicious when young. The wine has a beautiful garnet-red color, a concentrated, expressive bouquet with white flower and blackcurrant jam overtones that become more open and mineral when decanted. When swirled in the glass it shows spiciness reminiscent of cinnamon, liqorice, cigar and vanilla. The smooth rich body has well-integrated tannin without excess astringency with a good finish with notes of prunes in brandy. The wine may improve with a few more years of age, but at this price why wait.

2001 Vieux Chateau Palon, $24
  Saint-Emilion – Montagne

75% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc
The vineyards of Vieux Chateau Palon located on the magnificent hillsides of Calon, on the border of Saint-Emilion bask in Sunshine. The clay limestone soil contributes terroir to grapes. Aged in new oak the Palon is filled with blackberry and cherry character with hints of licorice and smoke.

2003 La Dauphine $26.50
  Fronsac

90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc
This Chateau and its vineyard were purchased by Jean Halley in 2000. He then completely renovated and modernized the facilities, installing a state-of-the-art gravity-feed system complete with sunken tanks, a rotating walkway and double vibrating sorting tables for performing a meticulous triage of the harvested fruit, and hired enologist Denis Dubourdieu to consult. With the improvements, and change in winemaking style, the wine has become a cult favorite. Robert Parker (the king of cult) describes the 2003: "This hedonistic sleeper of the vintage offers copious quantities of blueberry and blackberry fruit intermixed with earth and mineral-like notes. Dense, fleshy, powerful, and rich, with low acidity, it can be enjoyed over the next 7-8 years." Watch out. The wines rich cherry and plum flavors and soft tannins just might abduct you.
