Lesser known varietals from Campania and Piedmont |
Join us this Saturday and try a great line up of some of Italy’s less known varietals from two family run wineries –Mastroberardino from Campania and Michele Chiarlo from the Piedmont. From older varietals such as Grecco, Cortesse and Piedirosso they make classic Italian wines that are anything but ordinary. Michelle Gottschalk will be on hand to tell you more. Come give them a try.
2005 Mastroberardino, NovaSerra, Greco di Tufo $20
Mastroberardino is a tenth generation winemaking family from Campania. They were instrumental in rescuing and replanting the ancient Greco vines, which were close to extinction after the World Wars. Made from rigorously selected grapes, Novaserra has a fine complexity. The wine shows prominent apricot, pear, peach, almond, apple fruit flavors as well as some mineral notes. It has an excellent acidity and smoothness.
2005 Michele Chiarlo, Cortese di Gavi $17
A family run winery in Piedmont, Michele Chiarlo makes high quality wines in which the varietal features and terroir clearly stand out. Made from Cortese grapes, Chiarlo’s Cortese di Gavi is delicate and refined, with lean, subtle pear and citrus fruit flavors and minerals with a fragrance of lime blossoms offset by notes of almonds.
2005 Michele Chiarlo, Barbera di Asti, Le Orme $13
Chiarlo’s Barbera shows pure, ripe plum and strawberry fruit flavors underscored by a crisp acidic note and a hint of earth. This succulent wine has a supple texture supported by sweet, soft tannins.
2005 Mastroberardino, Lacryma Christi Del Vesuvio $17
The grape Piedirosso was mentioned by Pliny two thousand years ago. It is grown, in soil rich in ash, in the area surrounding Vesuvius. Voltaire sang its praises. The Lacryma Christi is full, with cherry, plum, raspberry and strawberry aromas supported by spiced pepper and clove. The wine is warming, well-structured and smooth, with refined tannins and a background of fruit and spice notes.
2006 Michele Chiarlo, Nivole Moscato, $14 (375 ml)
Perfect as an aperitif or a light finish to a meal, the Nivole Moscato has exuberant aromas of tropical fruit and honeysuckle blossoms mark this fresh, lightly sparkling wine and carry into a palate of ripe melon and mango flavors finishing on a delicate sweet note underscored by bright acidity.
