Gilbert Cellars
Washington Winery

Stop by this Saturday and try a lineup of wines from Gilbert Cellars. A prominent fruit grower, the Gilbert family began farming tree fruit in the Yakima Valley in 1897. In 2002 they purchased historic Stewart Vineyard near Mattawa on the Waluke Slope. The vineyard was originally planted in the 1970s by George Stewart, one of the original pioneers in Washington’s wine industry. The site is excellent for Chardonnay as well as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and Syrah. Gilbert’s winemaking emphasizes extended barrel aging. The reds are bottled unfiltered & unfined leaving body and complexity in the wines. Sean Gilbert will be on hand to talk about their winemaking techniques and show off the wines.

2006 Chardonnay, $17
From 30 year old vines that flourish in one of the oldest vineyards in the state, The Chardonnay was cold fermented for approximately 3½ weeks then racked to barrel and aged sur lee for 19 months. The wine shows aromas of fresh ground ginger, crisp Anjou pear, ripe Granny Smith apples and some citrus along with toasty, spicy oak notes. Light to medium in body, it has plenty of zip and zing, making it great as an accompaniment to food.

2004 Claret $18.60
68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, 10% Malbec, and 10% Petit Verdot.
Each varietal in the Claret was fermented separately before being racked into barrel and aged for 27 months. The result is a full bodied Bordeaux style Washington wine at a great price. The Claret has an herbal bouquet, and full smooth tannins that complement its dark fruit and black current richness.

2005 Cabernet Sauvignon $26
92% Cabernet Sauvignon & 8% Syrah
Aged for 21 months in 40% new oak barrels (half French & half American). This Cabernet Sauvignon offers an aroma of savory dried fruit and crushed herbs that leads into supple, sweet tannins accompanied by unbridled flavors of blackberry jam, fresh cedar, pipe tobacco, and black licorice.

2005 Syrah $26
The Gilbert Syrah is aged 19 months in 40% new oak barrels. This hedonistic Syrah delivers an aroma of wild violets and crème de cacao that lead into a plush medley of dark fruits and an enduring finish of French vanilla and roasted coffee.

2005 Malbec $26
The French have made Cahors from it for centuries. The Argentineans popularized it. Now see how well it grows in Columbia Valley. The Malbec is a new release for Gilbert. We get the first taste. Expect big full rich fruit with round tannis.
