Italian

Stop by the shop this Saturday and taste the some great full bodied wines from Italy. Big richly extracted fruit is the theme here, along with full tannins (ok, the prosecco doesn’t have much in the way of tannins). Modern in style, these wines flirt with opulence, while remaining distinctly Italian. Come give them a try.

Cantina Montelliana Prosecco, Brut $10
Cantina Montelliana lies in the foothills stretching from the Montello to the Asolo Hill in the heart of Veneto. This dry sparkler has a pale straw yellow color, fine perlage, fruity aromas, and well-balanced flavor.

2005 Villalta Ripasso $14
A blend of Corvina Veronese, Rondinella, and Molinara from Valpolicella in the Veneto, the Villalta Ripasso is a lot of wine for the money. After it is fermented and pressed, dried grapes are added to the wine for a second fermentation. This gives the wine more richness and complexity. The Villalta is full bodied with firm tannins, big dark fruit, tobacco notes and a good finish.

2006 Tenuta di Ghizzano, “Il Ghizzano” $16
80% Sangiovese, 20% Merlot
Tenuta di Ghizzano is a family run winery located a small hillside hamlet situated at 650 feet above sea level in the northwestern part of the Tuscany, halfway between Florence and Pisa. Their affordable Super Tuscan, Il Ghizzano is filled with dark full fruit along with notes of leather and spices.

2006 La Corte, Negroamaro $17
From Puglia, the heal of the boot, the La Corte Negroamaro is produced from 60 year old vines. The wine is barrel aged for 12 months before bottling. The La Corte has aromas of dark berry fruit with rich, sweet and spicy backnotes. The wine is big with mouth filling structure, sweet and seductive red berry fruit flavor followed by a dense finish.

2005 Fattoria Le Corti, Chianti Classico “Don Tomasso” $33

85% Sangiovese, 15% Merlot
A lovely estate on the western fringe of Chianti, Fattoria Le Corti is owned by one of Italy's oldest families, the Corsini, descendants of both a saint and Pope Clement XII (don’t ask how you get to be descended from a pope). That aside, the Dom Tomasso is a big Super Tuscan blend named after Duccio Corsini's grandfather Don Tommasso. The grapes are selected from the best parcels of the estate. The fermentation and maceration take place in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks, then aged for 16 months in French oak barrels, mostly new. It is aged another 6 months in bottle before release.
The wine is big and bold with aromas of plum, vanilla and cedar followed up by big black cherry flavor with firm tannin and a spicy finish. It is tasting great now and will get better with a little age.
