| 2005 Domaine Pech de St Jean, Viognier $17 |
100% Viognier
From vineyards in the heart of the Minervois, the Dom. Pech de St. Jean Viognier undergoes
cold maceration and fermentation for three to four weeks, and then is matured half in barrel and
half in vats. The result is a wine with full body balanced against crisp acidity. Look for
flavors of melon and citrus and a rich viscosity. |
| 2005 Domaine des Homs, Coteaux de Peyriac, Rouge $11.50 |
25% Syrah, 35% Carignan, 40% Cinsault
The 17-hectare estate in Languedoc Roussillon in the Coteaux de Peyriac region of the
Minervois, is run by Jean-Marc and Anne de Crozals and derives its name from the elm trees
('ormes') that surround the domaine. Jean-Marc and Anne run the estate strictly according
to organic principles. The Coteaux de Peyriac has a dark ruby-red color with scents
of jammy red fruits with notes of green herbs such as thyme and rosemary. It is fresh and
crisp with good acidity backed up with peppery black and warm red fruit flavors. Great with
a barbecue, it is also particularly well suited to charcuterie, pork liver pate or a pepper
steak. |
| 2005 Domaine des Homs, Minervois, Tradition Rouge $12 |
75% Grenache 25% Syrah
A rich example of Minervois, the Tradition Rouge has reserved aromas with
impressions of beautiful black fruit, minerals, some spices and smoke, a subtle touch
of vanillin and roasted hazelnuts, fresh, clean, hidden depth and complexity. The flavor
is quite intense, with great ripe, black fruit, medium bodied, supple tannins and spicy
notes mixed with vanilla and smoke that linger for a good finish. |
| 2003 Chateau Pech Rosie, Cabardès $16 |
50% Grenache, 50% Merlot
The vineyards of the Cabardes cover a mere 500 hectares on the northwestern border of
the modern Languedoc-Roussillon. It is exceptionally small in size compared to the
neighboring appelations. Situated at the crossroads between Western and Easterly winds,
Castle Pech Rosié is a 5 Hectare vineyard parcel spread on the south facing
slopes of the village of Montolieu where the Grenache vines are over 90 years old.
The grapes are organically farmed, hand harvested, fermented separately by varietal,
then aged en cave in cement vats for 8 to 12 months before bottling. The
Pech Rosie has attractive, intense, ripe-fruit aromas. The wine has a good
structure with clean ripe red berry fruits showing on the palate and slightly plummy
tannins on the soft finish. The Merlot bestows a fleshy roundness, the Grenache gives
body and contributes spiciness and pepper. |
2002 Domaine Grand Lauze, Ledogar, Corbieres, $19.50 |
35% Mouverde, 25% Carignan, 25% Grenache, 15% Syrah
Winemakers André and Xavier Ledogar, make this Bandol styled wine from
their neighboring Languedoc vineyards. They farm their 60 to 105 years old vines using
biodynamic methods, then hand harvest, sort, and de-stem. The wine is bottled unfiltered.
The Ledogar is a full bodied, robust dark garnet red wine, and has a heady floral nose
evocative of very ripe red berries with a touch of spice, elegant tannins and a long rich
finish. The 2002 (a not so great year farther north) is fabulous. |
