| Costieres de Nimes Robert Kacher |
| Costieres de Nimes, between Languedoc and Provence where the Rhone meets the Mediterranean Sea, is great place to grow grapes, but not as well recognized as other French wine regions. Noted importer Bobby Kacher collected a number of small Nimes producers that produce original wines true to their place and that deliver great value. This Saturday we'll be pouring a line up of wines from his portfolio. Kelsey Malm, who has just returned from visiting these vineyards, will be hand with stories about the wines and the people who make them. Come join us. |
| 2010 Chateau de Campuget, Rose $10 |
|
30% Grenache noir, 70% syrah Chateau de Campuget is a beautiful vineyard dating back to 1640. It has belonged to the Dalle family since 1941. The soil is stony forcing the roots to find water deep in the lower layers of clay. The rose has a very aromatic bouquet, exhaling scents of small red fruits such as raspberries or black currants. The flavor is a delicate impression of fruitiness with a pleasant fresh finish. (Campuget isn't imported by Kacher, but it is the first 2010 rose to arrive on our shelves so we had to throw it in.) Get ready for spring. |
| 2007 Mas Carlot Marsanne/ Roussanne Tradition $14 |
|
50% Marsanne (25 year old vines) 50% Roussanne In the old Provencal dialect, Mas means farm, and Nathalie Blanc-Mars manages this 75 hectares farm with the aid of her husband Cyril Mars, owner of the neighboring property Mas des Bressades (she married the boy-next-door). They are a great Provenal family - young and energetic with great vision and talent. The Tradition is aged sur lie in tank after fermentation. The wine reveals abundant quantities of minerals, orange blossom, pineapple and citrus presented in a medium-bodied, fresh, lively style. |
| 2009 Chateau Grande Cassagne $11 |
|
60% Grenache, 40% Syrah Located 25 miles west of Avignon in the small village of St. Gilles is the area called Les Cassagnes. The Dard brothers, Laurent and Benot, farm 80 acres of rocky benchland there. They work the grapes by hand with serious leaf-pulling and crop-thinning to ensure maximum ripeness and deep, saturated wines. The Grenache is tank-fermented, with a small portion of the Syrah being cask-aged. This wine exudes powerful red fruits and spice. The wine is well textured with ripe tannins that lay behind the fruit to create a wonderfully juicy, round wine. |
| 2007 D'Or et de Gueules, Les Cimels $15 |
| 50% Syrah, 25% Carignan, 25% Grenache Diane de Puymorin purchased Domaine de la Petite Cassagne in 1998 and renamed the property after her family's crest: d'Or (gold) et Gueules (red, in ancient French). Situated on the south/south-eastern slopes of the Costieres de Nimes, the soil is made up of cailloux (small stones or gravel) deposited by the Rhne River centuries ago. The vineyards are organically farmed with limited yields. Les Cimels comes from the old Occitan language meaning fruit bouquet. The wine is packed with juicy, spicy red & blue fruit along with more exotic, earthy notes of black pepper, licorice, violets and black tea. |
| 2006 Chateaux Guiot, Alex $17.50 |
| 55% Syrah, 45% Cabernet Franois and Sylvia Cornut own Chateaux Guiot doing all the vineyard work by hand with great care and skill. Cuvee Alex, named after Bobby Kacher's son, is a blend of Syrah and old-vine Cabernet Sauvignon from the best grapes on the estate. The wine is aged in new oak barrels for 13 months. The result is an enormously extracted, concentrated wine with very powerful black fruit and intense spice and wood notes of vanilla and chocolate. |
