Not Just for Dessert Wines

Come by the shop this Saturday and check out a sampling of rich sweet wines that will help chase off any grey and gloomy winter evening. They are perfect for sipping by themselves, even if you are by yourself. It also just happens that they are great to cap off the end of a meal, and convivially round off a dinner. The line up has something for everybody. Jeremy Minor will be on hand to tell you more about the assortment. We'll be pouring:

2007 Gunderloch "Diva" Riesling Spatlese, Rhienhessen,   $19
10% alcohol 4% residual sugar
Fruity but not overly sweet, the Diva is a very versatile wine. It works as an aperitif to wet the appetite, can stand up to fusion or far eastern cuisine, can go with some fruits or nuts for after dinner, and isn't too bad just sipping by itself. The wine has notes of poached peach, tangerine, lemon and honey on the nose, a correspondingly citric and peachy palate, with suggestions of marzipan, vanilla and candied citrus zest on the finish.

2006 Chateau Bel Air, St Croix du Mont, Bordeaux,   $11 (375ml)
St Croix du Mont is a close neighbor to Sauternes and produces the same style wine as its famous neighbor but at a much better price. This wine has aromas and flavors of tropical fruit, beeswax, freshly baked bread, honey, sweet spices and the unique botrytis notes. Full-bodied, rounded and perfectly balanced, Bel Air is tasting great now and will get better with age.

2005 Chateau Haut Charmes, Sauternes,   $37
Rumor has it that Haut Charmes is made from the younger vines of Yquem, the region's most notable Chateau. Is the rumor true? We don't know, but 2005 was an exceptional vintage for Sauternes as well as the rest of Bordeaux. The fog of the Ciron valley produces botrytis on the grapes that shrivel and concentrate the flavors and sugars as well as giving the wine its distinctive note. The Haut Charmes has charm, elegance, and true Sauternes character. A great comparison to the Bel Air. See which you like better.

Chambers Muscat, Rutherglen, Victoria, Australia   $15 (375ml)
In the warm fall climate the Brown Muscat grapes ripen and shrivel on the vines producing natural sugar levels of 30-36 degrees Brix. The raisined grapes are then picked, crushed and partially fermented before fortification. Wood aging follows in a program loosely resembling a solera system.  The Chambers is blended from aged barrels ranging between six and ten years old. Amber gold in color with copper hues, the nose offers fresh raisins, sultanas, lifted spirit and cinnamon oak spices. The palate is rich and silky, its sweet dried fruits balanced by aged oak tannins and bright acidity, providing a clean, rather than cloying, finish.

1999 Croft Late Bottled Vintage, Oporto, Portugal,   $17
Produced only in years in which the harvest has been very good, Crofts LBVs are aged for six years in barrel before bottling in order to get the best maturity while still retaining the plump, full berry fruit flavors. The wine has rich, plump, spicy, licorice aromas with smooth velvety palate, notes of preserves and mineral and a fruity, rich taste.
