2006 Bergerie de l'Hortus, Pic St. Loup Rosé de Saignée $15
30% Mourvèdre, 40% Syrah, 30% Grenache 2006 is a classic vintage in the South of France for all colors. This rosé de saignée shows the classic Hortus strawberries and violets in the nose. It possesses good acidity and ripe fruit in the mouth, making it the perfect summer companion to just about any food.
2006 Picpoul de Pinet, Hugues Beaulieu, $9
100% Picpoul grapes, also known as Folle Blanche or Gros Plant Picpoul de Pinet is known as the Muscadet of the south of France, and is one of the named crus of the Coteaux de Languedoc. Picpoul means "lip stinger," which refers to the high acidity of its must. Fresh aromas of grapefruit and exotic fruit, lime flavors, with focusing acidity, are hallmarks of Picpoul. This wine impresses novices and hardened geeks. Great with oysters and seafood.
2005 Col de Vents, Corbieres, $10
50% Carignan, 35% Grenache, 15% Syrah "Col des Vents" refers to the hills of the Corbières region which are swept by night winds coming off the sea and cooling the vineyards. The wine has ripe blueberry, cherry and garrigue (herbal) flavors. Great with a wide variety of foods and not bad just by itself.
2005 Domaine Lafond, Côtes du Rhône Roc-Epine, $11
Youthful Grenache aromas focus on raspberry cordial, ripe and bright raspberry with casis and plum notes and just a hint of a "leafy" undertone and of violets. The Lafond is nicely structured by snappy acidity and soft but perceptible tannins. A versatile table wine, it goes well with red meat, pork, grilled or roasted poultry and mild cheeses or a hearty bowl of the bean soup.
2004 Domaine Bertrand Stehelin, Gigondas $25
Grenache, Syrah The Stehelin is an intense wine with flavors of mocha, spice and rich licorice-like fruit, in a strong and slightly rustic style. It'll make you long for Cassoulet. Bronze medal winner at the 2006 Decanter World Wine Awards.
