Unique Wines |
| Sangiovesse from Tuscany and Nebbiolo from Piedmont are world renown. But Italy also is home to a large number of less known grapes that are unique and wonderful in their own right. This Saturday we will be tasting a number of them from the South of that country. We will be showing wines from Sicily, Puglia, Calabria, and Campania. Each with its own native grapes. It is a great chance to see each grape show off its distinct varrital character. Don’t miss this special tasting. |
| 2006 Baglio del Sole, Inzolia, Catarratto $14 |
| From Sicily, the Baglio del Sole is a 50- 50 blend of Inzolia and Catarratto, two white grapes used for making Marsalla, a sweet desert wine. However, this dry version is totally different. The wine is crisp and well structured with lemony notes along with hints of peach, nuts and pineapple. |
| 2006 Colosi, Rosso $10 |
| Also from Sicily, the Colosi Rosso is 100% Nero d’Avola, an inky grape with complex fruit aromas of plum cherries, and full fruit. The Wine Advocate describes it: The Rosso is the estate’s entry-level Nero d’Avola. It sees six months in cask. The 2006 is an awesome, mouth filling red loaded with dark fruit, chocolate and gorgeous aromatic intensity. Ideally the wine might offer a little more weight on the mid-palate, but this is a ridiculously good wine for the money. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2009. |
| Cantele, Salice Salentino Reserva $12 |
| Literally black bitter, Negroamaro is the main grape in this wine from Puglia. Wines made from Negroamaro tend to be very rustic in character, combining perfume with an earthy bitterness. Blended with 20% Malvasia Nera, the Cantele Reserva is full bodied with a deep ruby-red color and a complex bouquet. The flavor of mature fruit is accented by harmonious notes of vanilla from the French and American oak. its caramelized red fruits and spices are balanced by the tannins and acidity to create a smooth and luscious wine. |
| 2007 Statti, Gaglioppo $19 |
| Grown in Calabria, on the southern tip of Italy, Gaglioppo excels in the hot and dry climate making a wine full of spice, fruit and packed tannins. The Statti estate, owned by Alberto and Antonio Statti, is one of the largest in that small region. Fermented and aged in stainless, the wine has an intense ruby red color and a strong nose of cherries and spice, and a beautifully textured mouth feel. |
| 2007 Terredora di Paolo, Aglianico $19 |
|
80% Grenache, 20% Syrah. Chateau de Montmirail owns more vines in and around the villages of Gigondas and Vacqueyras than anyone else. The average age of the vines is over 40 years old, and although they sell a fair amount of their production off on the bulk market, they keep the best stuff for their own label. This family-owned estate, which passed from father to daughter and is now run with obvious enthusiasm by Monique Bouteiller and her son, Phillipe. This domaine's classic blend using primarily Grenache is rich and earthy showing red fruit in the nose and ripe, dusty tannins. |
