Big Wines from Small Vineyards
Small Vineyard Imports

Come join us this Saturday and try some great Italian wines from Small Vineyard Imports. Their goal is to discover the best hand-harvested, family-owned, earth-friendly Italian wine and we like what they have found. These are all small production wines made by individuals not corporations. But while the producers are small the wines are not. Tom Kelly will be on hand to tell you more about each producer, or check out their web site at www.svimports.com...

2001 Teunta Ponte, Aglianico, $13

50% Aglianico, 35% Sangiovese, 10% Merlot, and 5% Cabernet.
A blend with two of Italy's three noble grape varieties, Sangiovese and Aglianico! This smooth, generous wine has aromas and flavors of plumy white pepper, cherry, and blackberry jam. It is spicy, medium-bodied, and goes great with food as well as being fun to drink by itself.

2004 Antonio Sanguineti, Rosso di Montepulciano DOC $16
90% Prugnolo Gentile (Sangiovese),10% Merlot.
This classic "little brother" of Vino Nobile is the product of a beautiful collaboration between Antonio Sanguineti and the famous Lombardo estate of Montepulciano. The Rosso has enticing dried cherry flavors, moodier than many other styles and clones of Sangiovese. Only 500 cases were made of the Rosso.

2004 Perazzeta "Rita" Sangiovesse $18
100% Sangiovese.
From Montecucco, a region that produces some of the most robust, unctuous wines in all of Tuscany, comes this stunningly powerful, lush Sangiovese. Winemaker Alessandro Bocce takes full advantage of his land's terroir. Aged for 12 months in French oak barrels, this wine pushes the boundaries of Sangiovese. Named after Alessandro's wife AND mother, he said of his wine: "I had no choice but to name it Rita." He made 800 cases of the Rita.

2004 Giuseppe Lonardi Valpolicella Ripasso $20
75% Corvina, 20% Rondinella, 5% Molinara.
This Ripasso from Lonardi has dark, lush cranberry notes, with smoky chocolate that epitomizes the lovely characteristics of Corvina. While more affordable, the complexity is reminiscent of Amarone. It is a pleasing everyday Veneto wine that will keep up with bold foods or stand alone in the glass.

2002 Mauro Barbero "Ania" $28
100% Nebbiolo.
Nebbiolo d'Alba is the "younger brother" of Barolo and Barbaresco. Aged less, it is a softer wine, but comes from the same high-quality, loving craftsmanship that goes into its austere siblings. Cultivated from 80 year-old vines, this Ania spends 18 months in oak barrique and then 6 months in bottle before release. Only 350 cases where made of this wine. It has a stunning blend of dark tobacco, rich, plumy fruit flavors and the deep scented complexity of an antique spice closet. The 2002 shows what a good winemaker can do in a difficult vintage.
