| Come join us Saturday and check out a great line up of Spanish wines from Jorge Ordonez Selections. Since 1987 Jorge has been assembling his catalog of wines, working with small producers to bring high quality and good value wines to the U.S. These are all small production wines made with the care and handwork of old world winemaking, supplemented with modern equipment. The result is some really nice wine. Walt Summer will be on hand to show the selections. Come early if you want to taste a special treat! |
| 2006 Naia, Rueda $13 |
|
100%Verdejo
Verdejo has been made in Rueda since the middle ages. The Naia is largely fermented and aged sur lie in stainless steel tanks while 12% is aged in large oak barrels. The wine shows characteristic bright fruit flavors of grapefruit, lime and kiwi accented by a bit of herbaceousness and a long dry finish with crisp acidity. |
| 2006 Mano a Mano, La Mancha $10 |
|
100% Tempranillo
Grown in low-yield sandy soils and hand harvested before undergoing a long slow maceration
followed by 6 months aging in French oak barrels, the Mano a Mano shows aromas of black
cherries, plums, dried herbs and earth. The wine is medium to full-bodied, rich, well-rounded and
full of dark fruit flavors, backed by firm tannins. Made in a modern style with lots of fruit flavors up front, yet it maintains a distinctively Spanish style. |
| 2005 Can Blau, Montsant $15 |
| Carinena, Syrah, Grenache
Montsant is a horseshoe shaped appellation that surrounds Priorat. The grapes for this Rhone-like blend come from 35 year old vines, and make a wine with classic raspberry and black cherry aromas, a medium body with wonderful minerality and a surprising intensity for its price. |
| 2004 Emilio Moro, Ribera del Duero $30 |
| 100% Tempranillo (tinto fino)
The Moro family has been making wine for more than 120 years in the Riberia del Duerro. The grapes come from 18-33 year old vines that are macerated for 25 days then aged for 12 months in a blend of French and American oak. The Moro is floral and spicy, with fresh red fruit aromas and notes of minerals and coffee. It’s focused red dark cherry and licorice flavors are lifted by bright acidity that finish brisk and fruity with a lingering impression of tangy berries. |
2004 Allende, Calvario, Rioja $100 |
| 90% Tempranillo, 8% Grenache, 2% Graciano
“The 2004 Calvario is sourced from a single vineyard planted in 1945. . . The wine was aged for 14 months in 100% new French oak and bottled unfiltered. Opaque purple-colored, it offers up an expressive nose of toast, vanilla, spice box, floral elements, blueberry, and blackberry liqueur which leaps from the glass. This is followed by a mouth-filling wine with oodles of flavor, great definition, and plenty of ripe tannin leading to a finish lasting nearly a minute. Still an infant developmentally, the wine begs for
another 6-8 years in bottle. It should last for at least 25 years” – Wine Advocate - 95pts, Feb. 2007.We’ll only be opening 1 bottle of the Calvario, so come early. When it’s gone it’s gone. |
| 2005 Jorge Ordonez Seleccion Especial, Malaga 375 ml, $15 |
100% Moscatel de Alejandria
Harvested from old vine hilltop vineyards at 1800 feet, the grapes are dried in the attic at the winery where the doors are opened during the day and then closed at night. The fermentation is stopped at 12% leaving 120 grams of residual sugar. The result is a very fresh Muscat desert wine with a lot of exotic flavors and a very long finish. |
