| This Saturday we'll have a selection of Spanish wines open for tasting. 30 years ago Rioja was the king of Spanish wines with other districts getting little recognition or respect. Over the intervening years Spanish wine making in these other regions has gotten better and better. Grapes like Monestrell and Garnacha that use to be considered just "country wine" are now getting international attention. They add a great varriety to the Spanish palate. Come check them out. And we'll have some Tempranillo as well, because Rioja is still king. We'll also have a mystery white for you as well. |
| 2008 Flor del Montgo, Yecla, Organic Monastrell $11 |
100% Monestrell Flor's Organic Monastrell is grown in old low yield vineyards in Yelca where the grape has been cultivated since the 15th century. While these vines aren't that old, the wine reveals layers of juicy raspberry, red cherry and cranberry flavors with graceful ease, and a silky texture. |
| 2008 Bodegas San Alejandro, Calatayud, Las Rocas Garnacha $12 |
100% Garnacha Calatayud is an arid, high altitude region in northeast Spain, with large temperature fluctuation between night and day. Garnacha accounts for most of the area's production with most of it made by local co-operatives. In the early 2000s, French winemaker Jean-Marc Lafage and importer Eric Solomon convinced the co-op to bottle some of the older garnacha vineyards separately. The Las Rocas comes from 40 year old vines and has aromas of kirsch, raspberries, pepper and melted licorice, a fruit driven supple texture and a long aftertaste. |
| 2004 El Coto Rioja Crianza $14 |
100% Tempranillo El Coto de Rioja, is a five hundred hectare estate located in La Rioja Alta near the east bank of the Najerilla River. Facing northwest, vineyard soils are mostly ferric clay, sand and limestone, which contribute structure, power and elegant minerality to the wines. The Crianza is aged 12 months in 225-litre, American-oak barrels and 6 months in the bottle before release. Aromas of fresh raspberries, cherry and spice blend together in the wine with licorice and vanilla notes. The body is silky and velvety and sports a long soft finish.
| 2004 Bodegas Faustino, V Reserva $22 |
| 90% Tempranillo; 10% Mazuelo In the mid 1800s, Eleuterio Martinez Arzok started selling his wines in the Rioja and Basque regions, direct from the barrel, working from the back of a horse-drawn cart. Today the family run winery owns 1600 acres of its own vineyards, located in Rioja Alavesa at an altitude of between 1500 and 1800 feet. The climate is cool, influenced by the Atlantic Ocean, and the vines thrive in the chalky soil. The grapes for the Reserva come from 40 year old vines. The wine is aged one year in oak casks and then 2 years in bottle before its release. The Reserva has aromas of ripe fruit, clove, cocoa, and caramel along with leather and cedar notes. The wine is medium bodied and ballanced with well-integrated tannins and a lingering finish. |
