Face it. The Pilgrims knew nothing about wine. To make up for their lack, this Saturday we'll be pouring a tasty lineup of Spanish wines that will go great with the traditional (or even the not so traditional) Thanksgiving meal. Stop in and see if you don't find a match for what you're cooking. These wines also come in handy the rest of the year as well.
Castellar Cava Brut $12
20% Xarel-lo, 40% Macabeu, 40% Parellada Never heard of these grapes? You are not alone, but they are the traditional grapes that the Spanish put into the sparkling wine known to most of us as simply Cava. The Castellar comes from 30 year old vines and is aged for 12 months on its lees. It has a nice fruity flavor, lots of citrus notes, with a very dry and crisp tang. A perfect start to a Thanksgiving meal.
2009 Franco-Espanolas, Rinsol Rioja $10
This very fresh white Rioja is produced from 100% Viura. The nose is very fruity like a dry Riesling with notes of green apples and citrus. The body is bright and lively with flinty undertones, dry fruit flavors and a lip smacking finish. The Rinsol is a very versatile food pairing. It even goes with turkey.
2008 Seņorio de Barahonda, Carro, Yecla $10
20% Xarel-lo, 40% Macabeu, 40% Parellada 50% Monastrell, 20% Tempranillo, 20% Syrah, and10% Merlot. The Carro or "cannon" is a thick, round Monastrel blend packed with fruit-Blackberry, blueberry -- fresh and untouched by oak. If your turkey has a Cajun rub and cornbread stuffing the Carro won't miss. It is also a hit the rest of the year.
2007 Vinas del Vero, Somontano, La Miranda de Secastilla, Garnacha $15
This single vineyard on a rocky hillside 700 meters above sea level in Somontano, in northeast Spain, is planted with recovered ancient Grenache vines. The old vines produce wonderful fruit. Aged for 8 months in neutral French oak the grapes develop complexity but their character remains unobscured. The Grenache's spicy, cherry flavors make it a great food wine, full flavored but not overpowering. Great with gravy.
2005 Beronia Rioja, Reserva $19
90% Tempranillo, 6% Mazuelo (Carignane) and 4% Graciano From the Rioja Alta, the Beronia is a classic Tempranillo. Aged for 18 months in a blend of French and American barrels, the Reserva is fully developed with aromas of cherry, red currents. spices, vanilla and hints of tobacco. It has a smooth, velvety mouthfeel with lots of fruit and fine tannins yet is light bodied enough to be refreshing. You get to decide how well it will match a roasted bird.
