Together it’s a nice cross section of Spanish wine that offers something for everyone. Walt Sumner will be on hand to talk about the wines. Take a break from your weekend chores and come check it out.

2007 Las Brisas, Rueda, $11

50% Sauvignon Blanc, 50% Verdejo
The Las Brisas has a wide ripe array of fruity and grassy aromas, it is filled with gobs of ripe white fruits that are juicy and crisp at the same time. Fresh, sharply focused lime and grapefruit flavors carry impressively on the spicy finish. An excellent edge of acidity makes it a great match for white meats and seafood, and doubles as a thirst quencher.

2007 Vina Godeval, Valdeorras, $19

100% Godello
One of the oldest grape varieties in Spain, the Godello was documented even in Roman times, but was nearly extinct just a generation ago. Godeval gets much of the credit for rescuing the Godello grape from extinction. The estate made its first Godello in 1986. It is now recognized as one of Spain’s finest white wine grapes. Fermented and aged in stainless steel, the Godeval has an alluring perfume of mineral, floral notes, citrus, and tropical fruits lurking in the background. Smooth-textured, layered, and rich, this full-flavored, well-balanced wine is delicious.

2005 Venta Mazzaron, Toro, $11

100% Tempranillo
The Venta Mazzarron is made from ungrafted Tinta de Toro old vines. The vineyards are planted on soils that are a good blend of sand and chalk with a good amount of iron over the typical underlayment of clay which is common in Toro. “It offers a smoky, complex bouquet with notes of mineral and blackberry. Ripe, sweet, forward, and altogether pleasurable” and got 91 points from the Wine Advocate. A pretty high rating for such a low price.

2005 Alonzo de Yerro, Ribera del Duero, $35

100% Tempranillo
From extraordinary vineyards in Ribera del Duero, the grapes for this wine are hand harvested and hand selected before and after de-stemming. The wine undergoes a long maceration to draw out the full tannins and then is aged sur lie with batonnage for 12 months in new French oak barrels. The result is a full bodied, rich wine with lots of dark fruit and layered complexity.

2003 Casa Castillo "Las Gravas", Jumilla, $24

60% Monastrell/ 20% Cabernet Sauvignon/ 20% Syrah
Jumilla is a small mountain region located not far inland from the Mediterranean near the city of Murcia, about halfway along the Spanish coast. As its name indicates, Las Gravas (the gravel), the wine comes from vineyards located in the foothills of the Sierra del Molar Mountains which contain an incredible amount of gravel and stones that cover the mostly chalky soil. The layer of gravel is between 12 to 18 inches thick, and plays an important role in these vineyards because it prevents the evaporation of the scant rainfall that does occur in this region and traps the precious ground water that seeps down from the mountains thus enabling the vines to survive in Jumilla's adverse weather conditions.
Tanzer’s Internation Wine Cellar describes Las Gravas as “Dark red. Inky, smoky aromas of cherry, printer's ink and beef jerky. Powerful and youthful, with tightly wound, slightly bitter cherry and blackcurrant flavors and a firm tannic bite. Focused, spicy and long on the finish. Plenty of depth here.” Come taste it for yourself.

2005 Jorge Ordonez Seleccion Especial, Malaga, $16 (375ml.)

100% Moscatel de Alejandria
Harvested from old vine hilltop vineyards at 1800 feet, the grapes are dried in the attic at the winery where the doors are opened during the day and then closed at night. The fermentation is stopped at 12% leaving 120 grams of residual sugar. The result is a very fresh Muscat desert wine with a lot of exotic flavors and a very long finish.
