Veuve du Vernay Brut, SW France $10

Jean Eugene Charmat, who invented the closed vat method of fermentation, founded this winery.  Veuve du Vernay, meaning "widow from Vernay", was the first high quality sparkling wine made by Mr. Charmat paying tribute to a generous woman from St. Etienne who helped him start his business. The name of this mysterious woman remains unknown.  The wine is 40% Colombard, 40%, Sauvignon Blanc, and 20% Chardonnay grown on pebbly limestone soil, then hand-sorted and fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats. The Widow is fresh, fruity and floral with delicate apple and pear fruit flavors and smooth velvety bubbles.

Valdo Prosecco, Valdobbiadene $13

The name of the grape, Prosecco, comes from the once Slovenian village of Prosecco where it has been cultivated since 1800.  The hillsides in this region centered on Valdobbiadene, from where the winery takes its name.  The wine is delicate and aromatic fruit and floral creamy rich flavors of pear and apple.  Classic Italian bubbles.

Graham Beck Wines is a family run winery started by a charismatic South African coal tycoon turned boat builder, horse breeder and vintner.  The vineyards are located on 4 different farms within the western cape of South Africa and they practice ward winning biodiversity techniques. They use environmentally friendly pest and disease control methods. The Beck Rose is made using the Champagne method from 55% Chardonnay and 45% Pinot Noir.  The wine has a subtle pink hue and rapidly rising tiny bubbles.  The flavor is very fresh and vibrant.
