Animale
New Releases from 2007

Come by this Saturday and try the new releases from ANIMALE.  From his micro boutique winery located in Deep Upper Ballard, wine maker Matt Gubitosa creates a distinctive line up of local reds. Through a judicious use of oak, Matt emphasizes the varietal character of the grapes and letting the fruit show through. All the wines are unfiltered and unfined which adds richness and texture to their body. Past Animale wines have received glowing reviews in the Seattle Times, Wine and Spirits Magazine, Wine Press Northwest, Robert M. Parker Jr.'s Wine Advocate, and in a few wine blogs. That's a lot of notice for such a small winery.  We are also a fan of them ourselves.  These wines are all very limited, so don't wait to snap them up.  Matt will be on hand to tell you all the details, but the wines really speak for themselves.  Come listen.

2007 Pinot Noir - Oregon (Yamhill-Carlton), $22
An elegant and varietally correct Pinot Noir from a tiny family-farmed vineyard in near Yamhill, Oregon.  The cooler 2007 growing season made for both a mildly tangy mid-palate sure to go well with summertime grilled salmon; as well as ample structure to ensure a few years of cellaring.

2007 Petite Sirah,  $25

Petite Sirah is not a very common grape in Washington, but after tasting this one you might wonder why.  This third crop from the 0.6-acre vineyard near Sunnyside specifically planted for Animale.  The fruit ripened fully while retaining classic Yakima Valley food-friendly acidity.  Aromas of berries and spices, deep purple-black color, zesty complex flavors of fresh berries, plums, with hints of citrus, along with a pleasantly lingering finish.

2007 Syrah,  $26
The Animale Syrah is usually the most hefty of the bunch, and this vintage is no exception.  Classic Washington Syrah aromas of blackberries, boysenberries and freshly made jam, and a body so heavy it might be used as syrup, or as a meal in itself.  Certainly not for the faint-of-palate!

2007 Cabernet Sauvignon,  $28
Animale doesn't make Cabernet every vintage, but when the opportunity for this perfectly ripened, old-vine, cool-climate, family-farmed Yakima Valley fruit came up, there was no hesitation.  Classic Cabernet Sauvignon (perhaps even Bordeaux-like) aromas and flavors of fresh cherries and roasted red peppers, refreshingly balanced, enjoyable now, or suitable for the cellar.

2006 Petite Verdot, $28
100% Petite Verdot
This minor and almost forgotten Bordeaux varietal finds a great home in Washington.  From Wahluke Slope, the Animale Verdot has a deep, purple-black color, aromas of cherries with hints of cardamom and notes of graphite; full-bodied, intense and concentrated, firm acidity and a long and powerful finish.  This wine received a score of 90+ in the Wine Advocate.  It has now had a year in the bottle and is just tasting better and better.
