Stop by this Saturday to try a great selection of wines from Burgundy, France’s home of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Gamay. There are many little place names and a whole ranking system from the vineyards, but don’t sweat it, just come have a sip and see what you think. Unlike Burgundy’s perceived image, these are all great-tasting, ready-to-drink wines that are a bargain compared to some of their Oregon and California counterparts. Lisa Janke will be on hand to pour and tell you more.
2006 Talmard Macon-Uchizy $12
100% un-oaked Chardonnay, the Talmard Macon-Uchizy is complex, dry and well structured with slightly spicy, ripe lemon flavors with a very zesty lingering finish. It is a great introduction to white Burgundy,
2004 Louis Latour, Montagny 1er Cru Le Grand Roche $22
The vineyards included in the appellation Montagny are spread throughout a number of villages in the Côte Chalonnaise, namely Montagny, Buxy, St.-Vallerin and Jully-les-Buxy with limestone bedrock that give the grapes a distinctive quality. The vineyard of La Grande Roche is quite high up on the hillside, catching plenty of sunshine which aids the great concentration of flavors in the grapes. The wine is floral and crisp with flavors of nuts and dried fruit. On the palate it has a great balance between fatness and acidity. It is a great example of what Chardonnay can be.
2006 Cinquin, Domaine Des Braves, Regnie, Beaujolais $15
Gamay, the grape grown in the Beaujolais region in the south of Burgundy, makes a supple wine with good structure, cherry-red in color, with aromas of red currant, blackberry, and raspberry. Domaine des Braves belongs to Paul Cinquin who makes his wine using three different vinifications techniques: thermo vinification for color and lightness of aromas, Côte d'Or-style pigeage for extraction, and a different set of tannins and aromas, and semi-carbonic maceration for obvious and typical fruit, soft tannins. The blend gives more complexity of tannins and fruit than any one process. The Regnie is excellent with white meats, roast pork, cheeses, and is particularly good with mushroom-based dishes.
2005 Delarche, Pernand-Vergelesses, Les Boutières Vieilles Vignes Réserve $17
Full of deep, pure Pinot flavors, Les Boutières is Delarche's more showy cuvée, a full-bodied Burgundy with plenty of underlying minerality. The wine has a spicy aroma with hints of ginger and fresh raspberry and cherry flavors on the long, juicy finish. This is a really terrific price on a dense and dark-fruited Burgundy, with good structure and balance.
2005 Louis Latour Santenay $21
From the Cote de Beaune, the Latour Santenay is flavorful and medium-bodied with red ripe fruit and supple tannins. The wine is well balanced with a refreshing finish. The aromas of this young and fruity wine display powerful ripe fruit and leather which is echoed more intensely on the palate with hints of cherries. The tannins present are fairly soft and velvety adding to the ample and rounded character of the wine.
2005 Bouchard Beaune du Chateau Rouge 1er cru $32
Maison Bouchard Père et Fils is one oldest producers and vineyard owners in the Cote d'Or. A family wine merchant business was first established by Michel Bouchard and his son Joseph in Beaune in 1731. The first vineyards were purchased in Volnay in 1791 from the French Revolutionary Government, and so began a long history of gathering fine terroirs. In 1995 Bouchard Père et Fils was bought by Joseph Henriot, whose family have been growers and producers in Champagne for over 200 years. The Beaune du Chateau is grown on stony soil with elements of clay and limestone, and has good ageing potential. The wine has aromas of red fruits with some floral, earthy, and wooded elements. It is a full bodied pinot with great balance of acidity, tannin and supple warmth.
