Classic Rhones

Don't miss the tasting this Saturday when we'll be pouring a great line up of wine from the Rhone Valley. Possibly the most versatile of food wines, Rhone wines go good with everything from steak to Indian curry, and range from good everyday sippers to wines full of layered elegance. We'll be pouring some of each, including such classic areas as Vacqueyras, Gigondas, and Châteauneuf-du-Pape. You don't want to miss it.

2009 Le Clos des Lumières, Cotes du Rhone Blanc $10
70% Bourboulenc 20% Clairette and 10% Grenache Blanc
Domaine Le Clos des Lumières are third generation of vine growers who until 2003 sold their grapes to the local cooperative. They now keep the grapes and make the wine themselves. The Lumieres Blanc has a floral nose and an ample and bright body with notes of vanilla, toasted almond and citrus, and Bourboulenc is just fun to say.

2007 Domaine de Font-Sane, Cotes du Ventoux, Vieilles Vignes $11
70% Grenache, 30% Syrah
A fourth generation family of grape growers, Font-Sane is a small estate, comprising about 35 acres (25 of which are in Gigondas, the remainder in nearby Cotes de Ventoux) with vines averaging 50 years old. The 2007 Cotes du Ventoux is a great deal with more backbone than you generaly find in Ventoux. It has lots of black fruit with hints of blueberry and garrigue and a good long finish.

2008 Domaine La Garrigue, Cotes du Rhone, Cuvee Romaine $15
65% Grenache, 25% Mourvedre, and 10% Syrah
Renowned importer Eric Solomon worked with Domaine La Garrigue to create Cuvee Romaine, a custom cuvee of declassified Vacqueyras at a great price. The wine has a classic Rhone earthiness with notes of pepper, and garrigue that float over a full body of black berry and black current fruit and chewy tannins. The large percentage of Mourvedre sets this wine apart.

2007 Domaine de Font-Sane, Gigondas, Tradition $23
72% Grenache, 23% Syrah, 3% Mouvedre,2% Cinsault
The parcels used for the Font-Sane Gigondas surround this small winery in the shadow of the rugged Dentelles de Montmirail, the final vestiges of the Alps as they descend into the Vaucluse plain. The Tradition is aged in large wood foudres that let the wine mature without cloaking it with oakey flavors. The developed berry fruits blend in with notes of pepper, mineral and garrigue. It is complex and elegant. The Wine Advocate gave it 92pts.

2007 Clos de l'Oratorie Chateauneuf du Pape, Tradition $38
80% Grenache, 20% Syrah, Mourvedre, and Cinsault
"This is one of the oldest estates in Chateauneuf du Pape. It was sold at the turn of the century to the large negociant Ogier, and contrary to the idea that bigger is not better, Ogier has actually taken the wines back to their former glory of 30 to 40 years ago. The 2007 traditional Chateauneuf du Pape is a beauty - deep ruby/purple in color with a classic nose of jammy black cherries and black currants intermixed with lavender, spice box, fruit cake, and pepper. It is a medium to full-bodied wine with silky tannins, an alluring texture, and terrific purity and length. Drink it over the next decade." -- Wine Advocate 90pts. Sometimes Parker gets it right. Come and visit the Pope.
