Italian Beauties
from Bianco Rosso

Come join us this Saturday when we will be showing off some great wines from Italy. Local importer Bianco Rosso brings in this collection of Luscious Libations that we think will be eye popping. Pelissero, Conti Sertoli Salas and Poggio Salvi all come from long time wine making families. Antica Hirpinia is more of a new comer, but their Aglianico is rich and delicious. Ari Matzin will be on hand to tell you more about these makers. The wines will speak for themselves.

2006 Conti Sertoli Salas, Terrazze Retiche di Sondrio, Chiavennasca $16

Lombardia
This white wine is made from Nebbiolo, the most prestigious red grape in northern Italy. The light pressing of the grapes and the immediate separation of the must from the marc produce an elegant, dry and fruity white wine with light citrus notes. The strong character of the grapes gives the Chiavennasca a sturdy, viscous body and a complex character.

2005 Pelissero, Langhe Rosso $12

Piedmonte
80% Barbera, 10% Nebbiolo, 10% Dolcetto

Fermented and aged separately in stainless steel tanks, then combined and aged in second year French barriques, the Rosso has a garnet red color, rich bouquet with intense ripe fruit and oak. It’s warm and round on the palate with a mild tannins and acidity. A great food wine it, pairs well with poultry, or red meat dishes.

2005 Antica Hirpinia, Aglianico $16

Campania
Aglianico is like the Nebbiolo of the South in that produces wines with lots of structure and long aging potential. The Antica Hirpinia is fermented in stainless steel then matured in large oak casks for nine months. The wine is dark ruby red in color, with moderate tannins and scents of sour cherry, and has a vinous flavor. It goes well with first courses like polenta, or any meat dish.

2005 Pelissero, Langhe, Nebbiolo $21

Piedmonte
The Pelissero Langhe is a dense dry old school Nebbiolo. Aged less than a Barbaressco or a Barolo, is a brilliant violet red with lighter tones at the edge between the wine and the glass. The aroma is fruity raspberries and strawberries. The flavor is persistent with a slightly tannic note, typical of young Nebbiolo, mixed with dark fruits, a hint of tar and long and stimulating finish. A great match for stews or other rich dishes.

2001 Poggio Salvi, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, Reserva $28

Toscana
Poggio Salvi only makes 5.000 bottles of this Riserva. After the most diligent care of the vines, the use of only organic fertilizers, careful selection of the grapes and a long fermenting process with the skin, the wine matures for 36-48 months in large Slovenian oak barrels. It is bottle aged for another 6 -12 months before release. The result is worth the wait. The wine has an intense delicate smell with light scents of violet, strong cherry flavors and rich smooth tannins. This wine is ideal with red meat, game and mature cheeses.
