Domaine la Millière

Come join us next Saturday and try the Châteauneuf-du-Pape from Domaine la Milliere along with their other cepages and a couple from some of their neighbors.  2004 was a classic year in the Southern Rhone following the warmer riper 2003 and the washed out 2002.  Lisa Janke will be on hand to expound some more and pour from two ‘til four.

2004 Domaine la Millière Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Unique Vieilles Vignes   $29

The deep red Millière Châteauneuf is abundantly spicy, with gorgeous notes of tobacco and fresh lavender on its aromatic nose followed by jammy cassis and velvety black fruit.  At times La Millière seems flowery, reminiscent of violets and irises. At other times, baking spices dominate, such as cinnamon and nutmeg. For a wonderful surprise, open a bottle and watch the wine evolve over the course of the evening. La Millière wines are like a kaleidoscope that constantly refracts and reforms.

2003 Domaine la Millière Côtes du Rhône Cuvée Unique   $14.50

A bear hug of black fruit and electric spices announce this blockbuster Côtes du Rhône, birthed from gnarled Grenache vines no less than 100 years old. Rustic and hearty.

2004 Milliere Merlot VdP   $9.50

Southern notes of herbs and cherries open to a plush, round mouth of plums and blackberries, with easy tannins and bright acidity. Millière’s Merlot vineyards sit right next to his Côtes du Rhône plots.  This Vin de Pays is a unique merlot that has more in common with it’s terroir than either Bordeaux or California.

2004 Le Clos du Caillou Côtes du Rhône V.V. Cuvée Unique   $17.50

Many of Caillou’s vines are pushing 80, even 100 years old, and feed straight from the quartz-bright heart of this legendary terroir, essentially a Châteauneuf-du-Pape in soil, style and spirit.  Cuvée Unique is a blend of 75% Grenache, 15% Syrah, 5% Mourvèdre and 5% Carignane. Think blackberries dusted with baking spices, juicy cherries dipped in dark chocolate—a blockbuster Côtes du Rhône!

2004 Mas de Gourgonnier Rouge Les Baux de Provence   $17

Mas de Gourgonnier is located in Les Baux de Provence, a small and picturesque appellation in the southern French region of Provence, that is just due south of Châteauneuf-du-Pape.  The wine is a blend of the best of Provence: 36% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Grenache and 22% Syrah, with a touch of Carignane, Cinsault and Mourvèdre. Densely built yet not at all cloying; plenty of dark chocolate and spice lusciously layered, with notes of lavender and thyme are profuse. A wonderful wine from an excellent vintage, a great value, and 100% certified organic.
